YOUR 2025 COACHES

A Grade

Jeremy Smith

Meet Jeremy Smith, a rugby league luminary whose career spans the 2000s and 2010s, leaving an enduring legacy in both play and coaching. Born on April 14, 1980, in Christchurch, New Zealand, Jeremy's expertise now takes center stage in the coaching arena.

As a former professional rugby league player, Jeremy proudly represented clubs like the Melbourne Storm, St. George Illawarra Dragons, Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks, and the Newcastle Knights, co-captaining the Knights to new heights. Notably, his stint with the Dragons included a spectacular win at the 2010 NRL Grand Final.

Grounded in Samoan heritage, Jeremy's journey began in Christchurch, he carries his cultural roots with pride. His educational path led him to Coombabah State High School.

Jeremy's junior football days kicked off at the Altona Roosters in Melbourne before he made the move to Queensland, playing a pivotal role for the Runaway Bay Seagulls RLFC. This coastal connection has become an integral part of Jeremy's rugby league story.

Jeremy's resilience was tested, and he emerged stronger. A setback with the Northern Eagles in 2001 didn't deter him. Returning to Queensland, he found his stride at the Melbourne Storm feeder club, Norths Devils, where he was named the 2004 Devils Player of the Year.

Now, as Jeremy steps into coaching, he brings a wealth of experience and a passion for Runaway Bay.

Paul Kuhnemann

Paul Kuhnemann’s life has revolved around rugby league – from playing to coaching and everything in between.

Paul’s journey in the game began at the age of 6, when he pulled on a Wests Bulldogs jersey in Toowoomba. Even as a youngster, his passion for the sport was evident. By 17, he found himself in an A-Grade grand final, playing alongside his brother – a moment that remains a highlight of his early playing career.

At 19, Paul moved to the Gold Coast to join the Seagulls and take the next step in his rugby league journey. He later spent 11 incredible years at Runaway Bay, competing in numerous grand finals and creating memories that would last a lifetime.

In 2010, the Kuhnemann family tradition continued as Paul’s two sons began playing for Runaway Bay. Seeing his boys take to the field inspired Paul to transition from player to coach. Over the next 11 years, he coached at the club and took on representative coaching roles with teams from the Gold Coast and South East Queensland, helping shape the next generation of rugby league talent.

Reserve Grade

Jimmy Poland

Jimmy Poland will forever be remembered for his instrumental role in leading the Runaway Bay Seagulls to their historic A Grade premiership in 2018. His dazzling performance in the grand final against Tweed Heads, where he earned the Player of the Match honor, showcased his ability to shine on the biggest stage. But while that night etched his name into Seagulls folklore, Jimmy’s contributions to the club have only grown since hanging up his playing boots.

Today, Jimmy has transitioned from a commanding presence on the field to a guiding force on the sidelines as the Reserve Grade coach at Runaway Bay. Known for his calm demeanor, deep rugby league knowledge, and ability to connect with players, Jimmy has brought the same passion and precision that defined his playing days into his coaching career.

During his playing career, Jimmy was the epitome of leadership. As a five-eighth, his game management, vision, and composure under pressure made him a cornerstone of the Seagulls’ attack. These traits are now serving him well as a coach, where he instills discipline, strategy, and confidence in his squad.

Under his guidance, the Reserve Grade team has not only become a breeding ground for future A Grade stars but also a tightly-knit unit capable of competing against the best in the competition. Jimmy’s emphasis on hard work, communication, and teamwork mirrors the values that drove the Seagulls to success during his playing tenure.

Jimmy’s move into coaching isn’t just a win for the Reserve Grade side; it’s a testament to Runaway Bay’s commitment to nurturing talent on and off the field. By retaining a club legend like Jimmy in a leadership role, the Seagulls are ensuring that the next generation of players learns from someone who understands both the history of the club and the demands of elite-level rugby league.

For Jimmy, coaching represents an opportunity to give back to the club that gave him so much. “Runaway Bay is our home,” he often says. “Helping these young players grow and seeing them succeed—it’s the best feeling.”

With Jimmy at the helm, the Reserve Grade team is well-positioned to make a strong push in this year’s competition. While success on the field is always a goal, Jimmy’s focus remains on developing well-rounded players who are ready to take the next step when the opportunity arises.

As the Seagulls continue to build on their proud legacy, having someone like Jimmy Poland leading the charge ensures that the club’s future is in good hands. Whether it’s inspiring his players, passing on tactical insights, or simply sharing stories of that unforgettable 2018 grand final, Jimmy’s impact at Runaway Bay is as profound as ever.
